New Book Provides Wisdom for When a Child Leaves the Faith

[Exton, PA, August 10, 2022—]

What Would Monica Do? calls upon St. Monica’s example and intercession to provide hope and healing for those bearing the cross of a loved one who is away from the Faith.

Patti Maguire Armstrong and Roxane Beauclair Salonen know all too well the sorrow of watching a child turn away from God. In their new book, What Would Monica Do?, the two mothers and lovers of St. Monica provide a resource of inspiration and consolation for Catholic parents and grandparents experiencing this grief.

What Would Monica Do? is a book that tackles the tough questions about faithfulness and trust during times of trial. It is a response to the pain experienced by countless Catholics who are striving to share the Faith with those they love and facing rejection.

Armstrong and Salonen invite all readers to enter into a close friendship with St. Monica to provide those navigating this pain alone with a spiritual community.

“By delving more deeply into [St. Monica’s] life, we can nurture a friendship with her and count her as an intercessor, abiding in heaven, who can guide us to the same eternal destiny,” write the co-authors. “We invite you to enter into this circle of friendship as we continue learning together and praying for one another.”

As a mother who watched her son, the future St. Augustine, run from God for over 17 years, St. Monica provides a loving and faithful example on this topic of faith. By looking to her, readers experiencing this sorrow can work to trade in their anger and worry for the peace of Christ.

“Letting go and allowing God to take over can be the hardest step in finding freedom,” write the co-authors. “We have discovered, however, that in clinging to his power and glory, we can make powerful leaps in our faith journey—and that this, more than anything, will benefit our children.”

Praise for What Would Monica Do?

What Would Monica Do? has already received endorsements from Catholic leaders across the United States.

Liz Kelly, a Catholic presenter and award-winning author of over ten books, including Jesus Approaches, writes:

With St. Monica as their guide, these co-authors delve into a perennial problem within the Church with a great deal of heart and authenticity. … Readers will come away with renewed hope in the reality that God’s plan is still actively unfolding for their children—whether they can see it or not—and a deeper awareness that the Mass and Sacraments, prayer and fasting, and loving and listening without judgement, are powerful weapons in the fight for the souls of those they love.

Stacey Trasancos, a nationally-recognized author, speaker, and educator on the topic of theology and science offers her own endorsement:

Armstrong and Salonen take turns at writing, and it feels like you’re walking beside two friends as they reassure us, in their own ways, and remind us to keep the faith. They courageously dive into the issues faithful parents are uneasy discussing and show us we are not alone. We cannot have all the answers, nor do we need to despair! We can always ask what patient and persevering St. Monica would do and prayerfully strive to see the bigger picture.
